## Impact

Azure Virtual Machine disks configured with public network access pose a significant security risk. Publicly accessible disks expose sensitive data to unauthorized access and potential breaches.

Azure Virtual Machine disks are storage resources attached to Virtual Machines. Enabling public network access allows any entity on the internet to access these disks, bypassing security controls. Attackers can exploit this misconfiguration to steal data, deploy malware, or gain unauthorized access to the Virtual Machine itself.

The impact of this misconfiguration includes data breaches, unauthorized data modification, and potential system compromise. Restricting access to trusted networks only significantly minimizes these risks. This best practice ensures that only authorized users and services can interact with the disks.

To mitigate this risk, disable public network access for all Azure Virtual Machine disks. Utilize Azure Private Link or other secure network configurations to provide controlled access to necessary resources. Regularly review and audit network configurations to identify and remediate any misconfigurations.

## How to Fix

## Ensure that the `public_network_access_enabled` setting is set to `false`. \[source,go]

resource "azurerm\_managed\_disk" "fail1" { ...

* public\_network\_access\_enabled = true
* public\_network\_access\_enabled = false }

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://cortex-docs.paloaltonetworks.com/appsec-rules/iac-security/networking/appsec-azure-251.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
