# Security rules apply to all zones on Palo Alto Networks devices misconfiguration detected in code

## Rule Details

|                        |                                    |
| ---------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Cortex AppSec Rule ID  | APPSEC\_PAN\_17                    |
| Category - Subcategory | Public Exposure - Ingress Controls |
| Provider               | OTHER                              |
| Severity               | MEDIUM                             |
| Framework              | Ansible                            |

## Impact

This rule detects whether security rules on Palo Alto Networks devices indiscriminately apply to all zones due to configuration of both 'source\_zone' and 'destination\_zone' to 'any'. This configuration can potentially lead to overly permissive rules and unintended access across network segments.

## How to Fix

*Resource:* panos\_security\_rule

* *Attribute:* log\_setting

To mitigate this issue, ensure that the `log_setting` attribute in your `panos_security_rule` resources is defined, and points to an existing Log Forwarding Profile. This setup ensures that activity logs for each rule are captured and forwarded correctly, facilitating effective monitoring and analysis.

Secure Code Example:

## In this example, configuring the `log_setting` attribute with a valid Log Forwarding Profile name for each security rule ensures that logging is properly implemented for security monitoring and analysis. \[source,go]

  * name: Example paloaltonetworks.panos.panos\_security\_rule: ...
* ```
     log_setting: 'default'
  ```
## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.
Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:
```
GET https://cortex-docs.paloaltonetworks.com/appsec-rules/iac-security/networking/appsec-pan-17.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```
`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.
Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
