# RDS Performance Insights are not encrypted using KMS CMKs misconfiguration detected in code

## Impact

This rule is checking to ensure that RDS Performance Insights, a feature that monitors database performance, are encrypted using Key Management Service Customer Master Keys (KMS CMKs) provided by AWS. If not properly encrypted, sensitive data related to database performance could potentially be accessed by unauthorized individuals. Inadequate encryption of this data could lead to a breach of security and the exposure of confidential information. Therefore, it's critical to use KMS CMKs for enhanced encryption and protection of such data.

## How to Fix

*Resource:* 'aws\_rds\_cluster\_instance', 'aws\_db\_instance'

* *Arguments:* performance\_insights\_kms\_key\_id

## To fix the issue, you need to enable encryption on RDS Performance Insights using KMS CMKs. This can be done by adding the `performance_insights_kms_key_id` attribute in your aws\_db\_instance block, where the value should be the ARN of your KMS key. \[source,go]

## resource "aws\_db\_instance" "default" { allocated\_storage = 10 engine = "mysql" engine\_version = "5.7" instance\_class = "db.t2.micro" name = "mydb" username = "foo" password = "foobarbaz" parameter\_group\_name = "default.mysql5.7" performance\_insights\_enabled = true performance\_insights\_kms\_key\_id = "\<KMS\_KEY\_ARN>" }

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://cortex-docs.paloaltonetworks.com/appsec-rules/iac-security/storage/appsec-aws-354.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
