# Cortex XDR agent temporarily disable protection

Temporarily disable Cortex XDR agent protections in Cortex XDR for troubleshooting, using exceptions, policy changes, or Cytool.

Sometimes you need to bypass protection temporarily, for example to troubleshoot an application conflict. Cortex XDR gives you several options, from narrow to broad. Prefer the narrowest option that solves the problem.

### Tamper protection

Local changes to the Cortex XDR agent, including uninstalling it, stopping it, or using protected Cytool commands, require the **uninstall password**. Set a strong global password in [global agent settings](https://cortex-docs.paloaltonetworks.com/cortex-xdr-5.x/protect-your-endpoints/install-and-manage-endpoints/set-up-endpoint-protection/configure-global-agent-settings), and override it per Agent Settings profile if needed. Change the default password during onboarding.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Re-enable protection as soon as troubleshooting is complete. Policy and exception changes made in the console are recorded in the management audit log.
{% endhint %}

For local commands on each platform, see the Cytool reference in the [Cortex XDR agent documentation](https://cortex-docs.paloaltonetworks.com/cortex-xdr-agent-docs/readme).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://cortex-docs.paloaltonetworks.com/cortex-xdr/insights-and-tips-cortex-xdr/endpoint-and-cortex-xdr-agent-management/cortex-xdr-agent-temporarily-disable-protection.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
