# What is Cortex Data Security?

Cortex Data Security is the unified data security solution from Palo Alto Networks for protecting sensitive data wherever it lives across your organization. It covers cloud storage, SaaS applications, on-premises file shares and databases, database-as-a-service (DBaaS) environments, code repositories, and AI pipelines. The platform discovers, classifies, and protects your data from a single console, replacing the fragmented set of point tools that organizations have traditionally needed to cover each environment.

The platform brings together Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) and Data Detection and Response (DDR) on a single, shared data layer. Because all of these capabilities draw on the same classification engine and the same policy model, you define data security policies once and the platform applies them consistently across posture assessment and detection, pairing them with AI-powered investigation and automated remediation.

## Capabilities

The platform combines its primary pillars on the same unified data layer:

* **Data Security Posture Management (DSPM):** Discovers data assets, classifies their contents, and assesses configuration and access risk for data at rest across every environment.
* **AI Security Posture Management (AI-SPM):** Maps your AI pipelines (training data, models, model endpoints, and agents) as classifiable assets and assesses their risk against standards such as the EU AI Act.
* **Data Access Governance (DAG):** Analyzes identities and entitlements to calculate effective permissions and help you rightsize access to sensitive data. It enables you to enforce least privilege across humans, service accounts, and AI agents.
* **Data Detection and Response (DDR):** Detects and responds to data threats in real time, using behavioral baselines for every human and non-human identity, with full classification context attached to each alert to accelerate triage and reduce false positives.

## Architecture overview

The platform is organized as a set of layers built on a shared data foundation:

* **Shared data foundation:** Automated discovery and cataloging, AI-powered data classification, and a uniform governance and policy engine sit beneath everything else. Because all modules draw on the same classification results and the same policy definitions, the platform can correlate across domains, joining data, identities, and activity to detect composite risks that a single-domain tool would miss.
* **Functional modules:** DSPM, AI-SPM, DAG and DDR operate on top of the shared foundation rather than as standalone products stitched together.
* **Agentic operations:** Cortex AgentiX and Cortex XSOAR provide AI-driven investigation, prioritization, and automated remediation across the platform.

Data reaches the platform through connectors matched to each source type. Cloud accounts onboard through the cloud service provider (CSP) onboarding wizard, where you choose a scan mode:

* **Cloud Scan** (recommended): Palo Alto Networks performs scanning in its own managed environment.
* **Outpost Scan:** Scanning runs on infrastructure you host, for data-residency or compliance requirements.

On-premises sources connect through a [Broker VM](/data-security-documentation/onboard-and-configure/on-premise-onboarding/how-to-onboard-on-premise-assets-to-cortex-data-security.md#broker-vm), and SaaS and DBaaS environments through direct API integrations.

## Data inventory

As the platform discovers and classifies your assets, it builds a uniform inventory across every environment so you can see where your data lives, what it contains, and how exposed it is from a single place. The data inventory is the starting point for posture assessment, access governance, and investigation. ## Command Center

The Cortex Data Security Command Center is the central hub for information on the data ecosystem within your organization. It provides a comprehensive, interactive overview of your data security posture: every data asset discovered, the sensitive data that matters most, and the open issues, policy violations, and identities that need your attention. It's designed to help you quickly access relevant information and determine the next steps to take for effective data governance.
