# Offboarding and resource decommissioning (optional)

To completely remove the Cortex deployment, you must execute the offboarding process sequentially across your Azure hierarchy. Deleting resources in this strict, bottom-up order prevents orphaned dependencies and lingering permissions.

### Layer 1: Child subscription scope (run for each child subscription)

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```bash
az account set --subscription "<CHILD_SUBSCRIPTION_ID>"
# 1. Remove per-sub role assignments
for ROLE in   "<ASSET_DISCOVERY_DATA_ROLE_NAME>"   "<DSPM_DATA_ROLE_NAME>"   "<AUTOMATION_DATA_ROLE_NAME>"   "<KSPM_ROLE_NAME>"   "Key Vault Crypto Service Encryption User"; do
  az role assignment delete --role "${ROLE}" --assignee "<CORTEX_OBJECT_ID>"     --scope "/subscriptions/<CHILD_SUBSCRIPTION_ID>" || true
done
# 2. Remove RG-scoped role assignments
for ROLE in "<DSPM_RG_ROLE_NAME>" "<ADS_RG_ROLE_NAME>"; do
  az role assignment delete --role "${ROLE}" --assignee "<CORTEX_OBJECT_ID>"     --scope "/subscriptions/<CHILD_SUBSCRIPTION_ID>/resourceGroups/<RG_NAME>" || true
done
# 3. Delete the per-sub cortex-platform-rg (kills the ADS gallery)
az group delete --name "<RG_NAME>" --yes --no-wait || true
```

{% endcode %}

### Layer 2: Host subscription scope (run once)

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```bash
az account set --subscription "<HOST_SUBSCRIPTION_ID>"
# The host sub's cortex-platform-rg holds the EH namespace + EH + consumer
# group + UAMI + federated credentials + Storage Account.
az group delete --name "<RG_NAME>" --yes --no-wait
```

{% endcode %}

### Layer 3: Root management group scope (run once)

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```bash
# 1. Delete the MG-scope Activity Log diagnostic setting
az rest --method delete   --uri "https://management.azure.com/providers/Microsoft.Management/managementGroups/<MG_ID>/providers/Microsoft.Insights/diagnosticSettings/CortexMonitorDiagnosticSettings?api-version=2021-05-01-preview" || true
# 2. Revoke MG-scope role assignments
for ROLE in   "<PLATFORM_BASE_ROLE_NAME>"   "<DSPM_ROLE_NAME>"   "<ADS_ROLE_NAME>"   "<REGISTRY_ROLE_NAME>"   "<AUTOMATION_ROLE_NAME>"; do
  az role assignment delete     --role "${ROLE}" --assignee "<CORTEX_OBJECT_ID>"     --scope "/providers/Microsoft.Management/managementGroups/<MG_ID>" || true
done
# 3. Delete MG-scope role definitions
for ROLE_NAME in   "<PLATFORM_BASE_ROLE_NAME>"   "<ASSET_DISCOVERY_DATA_ROLE_NAME>"   "<DSPM_ROLE_NAME>"   "<DSPM_DATA_ROLE_NAME>"   "<DSPM_RG_ROLE_NAME>"   "<ADS_ROLE_NAME>"   "<ADS_RG_ROLE_NAME>"   "<REGISTRY_ROLE_NAME>"   "<AUTOMATION_ROLE_NAME>"   "<AUTOMATION_DATA_ROLE_NAME>"   "<KSPM_ROLE_NAME>"; do
  az role definition delete --name "${ROLE_NAME}"     --scope "/providers/Microsoft.Management/managementGroups/<MG_ID>" || true
done
```

{% endcode %}

### Layer 4: Tenant scope (Tenant-only deployments)

Skip this layer if you onboarded at the management group scope

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```bash
az rest --method delete   --uri "https://management.azure.com/providers/microsoft.aadiam/diagnosticSettings/cortex-tenant-aad-logs?api-version=2017-04-01-preview" || true
```

{% endcode %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://cortex-docs.paloaltonetworks.com/microsoft-azure-manual-onboarding/azure-manual-onboarding-guide/azure-manual-onboarding-management-group-or-tenant-scope/offboarding-and-resource-decommissioning-optional.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
